Long, long ago, there was a time age called the Middle Ages, the beginning of a time period in European history with knights, kings, queens and peasants also known as serfs. If you were a serf, you worked for high quality people. If you were in the top class, you would have people working for you.
The Middle Ages started in 500 a.d. and ended in 1400. Charles Martel is a Frankish leader who defeated a Muslum army at present day France. Charles Martel’s grandson was Charlemagne. Charlemagne was known as "Charles the Great". He was best known for conquering kingdoms. He conquered the the kingdoms near the southwest side now known as France,Italy and Germany. Charlemagne had a role in relation to Roman Christianity. This was to spread Roman Christianity throughout the land. In 800 a.d., Pope Leo crowned Charlemagne as emperor because the old Empire had risen again.
Feudalism is a government created to keep peace in the land. It helps control their land in which the king divides into Feifs. Feifs are pieces of land the king gives to his nobles. It started around 800 a.d. It was used to help control the lands. This was made by the loyal king. It helped maintain life, service, and order by fiefs. The Oath of Fealty was if you are a noble, you have to promise to maintain peace, loyalty and support in war. Knights….. a knight is a person that fights for the king. He would have to be at least 18 years old and be able to fight. They also fought for what was theirs and for the church. If you were a man that lived in the Middle Ages you would have no choice, but to be recruited as a knight. Serfs would have to pay taxes using their crops and by working for their Lord. They played the role of the peasant. Where did the serfs live? They lived in a Manor; Manors are the villages around the house that the Lord or Fief’s owner lived in. Churches usually sat on top of Manors. Vikings came from Norse Culture/ Denmark, Norway and Sweden. Vikings invaded villages and terrorized towns. William the Conqueror established a strong government in England. This brought many elements of French culture to the island. King John of England ruled from 1199 to 1216. In 1215 he signed the Magna Carta. The Magna Carta was a document that gave people rights. There was a group of nobles called vassals who forced him to sign it. They made him sign so he could not violate the rights of free men and women; set unfair taxes, make unfair demands of goods and labor, or imprisoned people without a trial.
In the Middle Ages, there were people who were known as monks. Monks wrote books of prayers, poetry, they also wrote books on ancient Greek. Monasteries are where they lived and dedicated their lives to God. They copied manuscripts in a room called a scriptorium. Monks would copy Italian and Roman Scripts onto scrolls. Now on to Nuns. They lived in a special community called a convent. A crusade is a land that was fought over by war. Christians fought for their Holy Lands, against the Muslims. The Reconquista is a long war fought by Christian armies to recapture Spain.
There where merchants and craftsman back in the middle Ages. They pretty much did what they do now. They try to sell, seLL, and SELL! If you were an apprentice of a merchant, you would be expected to sell. A craftsmen makes crafts for example: a crafter might make jewlery, beads, clothes or furniture. These are the type of things that a craftsmen does in general and would usually trade/sell their products. The Black Death is a plague that was a very powerful disease. This disease is spread by bacteria, rats, and fleas. This disease killed millions of innocent souls. People have traded before. People traded things like crafts, food and mostly animals. An apprentice is a assitant usually given to workers. They handle extra work and help their master. They have to work for future reference. A journeymen is a person who has gone through apprenticeship and very well educated in crafts but is still not perfect. A master craftsmen is someone that was part of a membership to a guild. Only masters could be a part of this membership. ‍‍‍‍‍‍‍
